Review

Named as Part of Bustle's Scariest Book in Your State for Pennsylvania.“Color us captivated. This collection seems a treat for anatomy enthusiasts and creaturephiles alike."—io9“E.B. Hudspeth’s The Resurrectionist is PFA (that’s pretty freaking amazing)”—ComicsBeat.com   “These detailed and fantastical drawings will intrigue any reader curious about the hypothetical anatomy of mythical creatures such as mermaids, minotaurs, and harpies. In the context of the story that precedes them, they prompt disquieting thoughts about the extreme lengths to which the fictional Dr. Black may have been willing to go to prove his assumptions, and what—or who—may have served as his models.”—ForeWord Reviews   “…a bit of Charles Darwin and a bit of P.T. Barnum.”—Inked Magazine “Doctors Moreau and Frankenstein should make room for a new member of their league of extraordinarily grotesque gentlemen, for there is a new mad scientist in pop culture.”—Aaron Sagers, MTV Geek“The vivid imagery unveiled becomes the dark fantasy response to Gray's Anatomy...”—Filter Magazine“The book is a welcome addition to any library of dark fantasy, with its beautiful portraiture and gripping description of a man’s descent into perversity.”—Publishers Weekly, “Pick of the Week”“Disturbingly lovely . . . The Resurrectionist is itself a cabinet of curiosities, stitching history and mythology and sideshow into an altogether different creature. Deliciously macabre and beautifully grotesque.”—Erin Morgenstern, author of The Night Circus “A masterful mash-up of Edgar Allan Poe and Jorge Luis Borges, with the added allure of gorgeous, demonically detailed drawings.  I’ve never seen anything quite like The Resurrectionist, and I doubt that I will ever forget it.”—Chase Novak, author of Breed“Fans of Neil Gaiman, Hieronymus Bosch, and the Mütter Museum are sure to love [The Resurrectionist: The Lost Work of Dr. Spencer Black] and the rest will certainly be both astounded and intrigued by what you find inside!”—The Garden Island

Wow, not knowing what to expect I was first impressed with the quality of the book, from the way the pages feel and the quality of the paper and illustrations it's simply first class from the moment I touched it.It's history, vision, twisted and amazing all rolled up in one. Imagination, art, insane? You'll have to be the judge, I for one went from stunned to impressed and back to stunned. First class work.

A very spooky read. A shame that it isn't longer. It's not a ''novel'' persay, but rather the retelling of a mad scientist. First half is the story part, the second half is creepy illustrations and descriptions of the various half-human abominations the Resurrectionist believed to have existed. If you are into horror and cryptozoology, I'd definitely recommend this. If you are looking a more conventional horror novel, then this might not be up your alley. You may however be pleasantly surprised!

This book is about a fictional doctor who believes human deformity stems from some lost memory in the dna or genetics of mythological creatures. Most is in the form or letters or personal notes with some story background. As the doctor descends into his "research and work" you can sense and "see" him descend into madness. His medical experiments are dark and somewhat startling and some not predictable at all. Its almost like brilliant surgeon turned Frankenstein in his experiments. Its sad, grotesque, and opens a new door into genetic exploration at a fictional level. The artwork in the form of plates is phenomenal and works very well for this book and its storyline. It falls into the realm of macabre without being overly so. I would recommend this book if you like the strange, forbidden, and a solid short storyline.

The Resurrectionist by E.B. Hudspeth I came across on Amazon through one of their routine mailings, it may have been their first read program but I no longer remember. I finally got to finish this two part book and was very impressed. The first part is a fictional biography of a doctor who falls from grace after he becomes obsessed with cryptids and trying to prove that they once existed and even interbred with humanity in some cases. The second part of the book is his detailed anthropological bestiary.I have to applaud the author. The biography is engaging and believable. We get to ride along as the madness takes over Dr Black’s life and experience the havoc it causes in his family. I found it exceptionally poignant that he experiences the loss of his wife twice and the lengths he went to in attempting to save her each time. We are left with the revelation that one of his children is crazed as well and that the bestiary and notes may or may not have fallen into his offspring’s hands despite his terror of what may happen if that were to happen. If they do a second book and follow that young man I would be just as interested to read that as well. The second part of the book was also well done. I read this on my phone but to really appreciate the level of the bone and muscle studies I will have to open it again on either my kindle, a tablet, or my laptop itself. I debate hooking up to one of the TVs to REALLY get a good close view of the little details. I may do so and confuse the kids as to what I am actually up to. It is not an extensive bestiary but it does cover mermaids, satyrs, harpies, and a few other such creatures. Anyone that is a fan of cryptids, anatomy, or taxidermy will likely find this section fascinating.I highly recommend this book, especially to those like myself who love cryptids and the possibility of other species mingling unknown with our own. Those that enjoy the Skin Deep Comic may also find this interesting.

"Philadelphia, the late 1870's. A city of gas lamps, cobblestone streets, and horse-drawn carriages-and home to the controversial surgeon Dr. Spencer Black. The son of a grave robber, young Dr. Black studies at Philadelphia's esteemed Academy of Medicine, where he develops an unconventional hypothesis: What if the world's most celebrated mythological beasts were in fact the evolutionary ancestors of humankind?" -From the book.
